Buffalo Science Museum, Buffalo, Erie County

Cofeld Judaic Museum , Buffalo, Erie County

The internationally renowned Cofeld Judaic Museum of Temple Beth Zion displays over 1,000 Judaic artifacts dating from the 10th century in a landmark temple. 716-886-7150.

Erie Canal Museum, Lockport, Niagara County

Approaching Locks 34 and 35 in Lockport, the vertical rock walls rise abruptly on either side, revealing the jagged bone and torn sinew of the canal's final challenge-the Niagara Escarpment. The "Famous Five" stair locks, regarded as an engineering marvel when built, are now used only for overflow. The old hydraulic power house that once operated the city's locks and two lift bridges, is now a canal museum. Today, dual locks lift boats 50 feet on their way to Lake Erie and points west.

Lackawanna Steel Museum, Lackawana, Erie County

Once home to the largest steel plant in the world, Lackawanna now pays tribute to western New York's steelworkers at the Steel Plant Museum. Photos, exhibits and memorabilia depicting the region's industrial past are housed in the beautiful Carnegie Library. 716-823-0630.

Old Fort Niagara, Youngstown, Niagara County

Western New York's colonial legacy lives on at Old Fort Niagara. This 18th century military compound was occupied, in turn, by French, British and colonial troops. Historic buildings date from 1726. Open daily, year-round, Old Fort Niagara features cannon and musket firings, historical re-enactments, 18th century military living demonstrations and archeology programs. 716-745-7611.
